Change of heart

Writer: Laurie McIntoshLaurie McIntosh
Text on a white background reads, "Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate." The message conveys positivity and encouragement.

If you have followed me for a while, you will know that I frequently post my favourite saying,

“Promote WHAT you love instead of bashing WHAT you hate…”

I’ve never been able to confirm for sure who first said this quote, but it touched me so deeply that I adopted it as a mindset, a value to live by, a lifestyle. I have even written a blog about it here.

But recently, I’ve had a change of heart.

Do I still believe it is an important way to live? Absolutely. But recently, I realize I am not promoting WHAT I love but WHO I love. And I am realizing more and more that there is a big difference.

Black text on white background reads "Promote who you love" with "what" crossed out and replaced by "who."

Make no doubt about it. I am “known” for being the promoter and lover of many things. It is why when I receive a gift or meet someone new or get onto a podcast, there are common themes. I am not quiet about the things I love. If they bring me joy? I want everyone to have the opportunity to share in that joy with me.

It has made me realize that the things I am known for loving? They really aren’t things at all. It is the people behind these things and how those people make me FEEL that make me fall in love.

Let me give you some examples…

I am not promoting the “Fanny Pack” by Koo Koo Kanga Roo as much as I am promoting Bryan and Neil who have become dear friends who I can constantly feel cheering me on.

I am not promoting Cilantro and Chive the PLACE (although the food is something worth promoting any chance I get…) I am promoting the people who work there and my incredible friends and leaders Rieley and Kim Kay who run the joint and give so much back to the community.

Although I love everything Dr. Jody Carrington does and speaks about and stands for, it is not the words I am promoting. It is her. Her transformative passion that I believe in to the core of my soul. The belief I have that she has the power to change the world through her work.

So, I am changing my very favourite quote and narrative after all these years.

It is not promoting the what, it is promoting the who.

And it is a change of heart and language that makes me smile and helps me focus on all the amazing in the world that I am blessed to be surrounded with.

And you better believe that I will keep promoting them for all of my days (just as I know they – and so many others – will do for me).

Who are your favourites to promote? How can your promote and support those you believe in today? I would love to hear them.
